What Is a Reasonable Excuse for an HMRC Penalty?

A professional UK tax adviser helping a client organise an HMRC penalty notice, supporting documents and a dated timeline for an appeal.

HMRC may cancel certain tax penalties if the taxpayer had a reasonable excuse for missing a deadline or failing to meet an obligation. However, simply forgetting, relying entirely on an accountant or struggling to find the money will not normally be enough. A successful appeal should explain what happened, how it prevented compliance and how quickly the taxpayer corrected the failure.
